In September 1939, the Australian Army was divided up into 8 Military Districts which were mainly based on geographic state boundaries.

MILITARY DISTRICT HEADQUARTERS
1st Military District, Queensland Brisbane
2nd Military District, New South Wales Sydney
3rd Military District, Victoria Melbourne
4th Military District, South Australia Adelaide
5th Military District, Western Australia Perth
6th Military District, Tasmania Hobart
7th Military District, Northern Territory Darwin
8th Military District, New Britain, New Hebrides Rabaul
