The 54th Anti-aircraft Searchlight Company (54 AASL), later known as the 54th Anti-aircraft Searchlight battery was located in Darwin, Northern Territory in July 1940. They were still there in January 1941. Some of the men from 54 AASL Coy in Darwin were relieved by some reinforcements from 64 AASL Coy, Eastern Command to allow them to take some leave.

In March 1944 they were located at Sunshine in Victoria . One of those serving with 54 AASL at that time was Bombardier G.M. McHattie (VF 397543).
