The 583rd Signal Air Warning Battalion was activated at Drew Field, Florida, USA on 1 April 1943. Men and radar equipment from the 710th SAWB, 711th SAWB, 712th SAWB, and 715th SAWB transferred to the 583rd following the disbandment of these other units.

In Australia they were attached to V Fighter Command, 5th Air Force. They left Camp Doomben in August 1943 arriving in Port Moresby on 19 September 1943.

They went on to operate from Oro Bay, Nadzab, Hollandia, Leyte, Dulag area, San Roque and Luzon. They appeared to have used SCR-602 radar units with Yagi antennas.
