CAPTAIN CLARENCE RYLAND "KIP" CHASE
LATER MAJOR CLARENCE CHASE
IN AUSTRALIA DURING WWII
Captain Clarence Ryland "Kip" Chase, was the second Aide-de-Camp for Lieutenant General George C. Kenney in Brisbane during WWII. In December 1942 Lt. Gen Kenney and Captain Clarence R. Chase were located in Room No. 402 on the 4th floor of the AMP building which was used by General Douglas MacArthur as his General Headquarters Southwest Pacific Area GHQ SWPA.
"Kip" Chase named Lt. General Kenney's private B-17 Flying Fortress "Sally" after his wife. Mrs. Sally Chase sent a mounted St. Christopher medal which was placed on the wall of the radio room onboard the B-17 "Sally".
Captain "Kip" Chase was quartered in Room No. 107 of Lennons Hotel in George Street Brisbane as shown on a room allocation from the Billeting Office dated 28 September 1942.
"Kip" Chase was later attached to the Headquarters of General Douglas MacArthur and Kenney went the rest of the war without an Aide-de-Camp. Mrs Beryl Stevenson then became Kenney's private Secretary.
Cason Cox obtained Major Chases' Jacket and pants from a person on a Militaria Trading page on Facebook. Cason told me on 29 December 2019:-
"I don't think he understood what he had nor did I at the time....... I'm excited and proud to have it after the research and your page."
The Jacket was made by Pike Brothers Limited in Queen Street, Brisbane. Mr. Wyn Pike, the governing director of Pike Brothers Ltd., Brisbane was appointed the Commander of the Queensland Wing (No. 3 Cadet Wing) of the Air Training Corps in August 1941 with the rank of Wing-Commander A.T.C.
