"WAUNA" BRISBANE KINDERGARTEN

COMMANDEERED BY THE MILITARY
IN AUSTRALIA DURING WWII
"Wauna" was a private house built in 1880 on Victoria Park Road, Kelvin Grove, Brisbane. It was owned by Mr Edwyn Mitford Lilley whose funeral moved from "Wauna" on 15 June 1911.
"Wauna" was up for sale by Public Auction in June 1912. It was described as a "Charming residence, fronting Victoria Terrace within a few yards of the Kelvin Grove Tramline, and opposite the site of the new Government House. The land is described as allotments 10 and 11 of Section 2, Parish of North Brisbane, comprising 2 acres, 1 Rood, 20 3/4 Perches with a substantial brick and wooden residence highly finished and in perfect order, containing 10 rooms and office, with wide verandas."

The Brisbane Kindergarten Training College was transferred to "Wauna" in 1920. The home was rented by the Creche and Kindergarten Association which eventually purchased the house in 1923. The Brisbane Kindergarten Training College was closed in 1942 when "Wauna" was commandeered by the Military for use as barracks for the Australian Women's Army Service (AWAS).
"Wauna" was replaced by a four story brick building in 1965.
