SEABRAE ENLISTED MENS REST CAMP
USN
REDCLIFFE, QLD
IN AUSTRALIA DURING WWII
Seabrae Guest House was owned by the Sampson family during WWII. Seabrae became a refuge for women and children evacuated from Hong Kong when WWII broke out in Europe. Seabrae was then used by the Australian Army in 1942 and then sublet to the US Navy as an Enlisted Mens Rest Camp in 1943.
In 1943, the American clarinet player, composer, bandleader and actor, Artie Shaw, played to a crowd of about 300 people at Seabrae. This was apparently his first music concert in Australia.Seabrae was returned to the Sampson family in January 1945 and they turned the Seabrae Guest House into the Seabrae Hotel.
