In 1942 the Mackay Hotel at 179 Victoria Street, Mackay on the corner of Wellington Street, was taken over by the Americans and used as an Officer's Mess and Sleeping Quarters. The Mackay Hotel was owned by Curley and Florence Poole. They opened a temporary bar a few doors down the road in Victoria Street.
