The Civil Construction Corps (CCC) had a large camp near Ellison Road at Chermside in Brisbane during WW2. Their nightly two-up game was highly popular with the soldiers from the neighbouring camps. The game often ran all night with much money won and lost.

A USAAF P-40 Kittyhawk crashed at nearby Camp Chermside in Brisbane in about 1944 about 50 metres from where the Kedron-Wavell RSL club is located. The AWAS camp was at the top of Kuran Street in Chermside.

There was a bomb and ammunition dump in Beneke's paddock in the bush near the corner of Webster Road and Rode Road. It was guarded by U.S. Negro soldiers.

There was a petrol dump in Basnett's property on Hamilton Road, Chermside.
