"CARENO" 79 MORAY STREET

USED BY THE RAAF
IN AUSTRALIA DURING WWII
"Careno" at 79 Moray Street, New Farm, at the river end of Barker Street, was used by the Brisbane Section of the RAAF Service Police Unit during WWII. "Careno" had previously been owned by Mr. R.H. Couldery. See his advertisement below for the Auction Sale at "Careno" at 10:30am on 27 January 1942 to sell his furnishings inside "Careno".

Air Board Agenda 4856/1943 was submitted for the Air Board meeting dated 22 April 1943 for approval for Works at "Careno" to allow the RAAF to use the site for Brisbane Section of the RAAF Service Police Unit. "Careno" at that time was already used as the Provost Marshal's Headquarters.
"Careno" provided provided separate and independent accommodation including Office, Messing and Sleeping space for the Brisbane Section of the RAAF Service Police Unit. The basement with the addition of latrines and ablutions provided accommodation for all the WAAAF personnel. The ground floor was sued for office accommodation, Officers' Sleeping Quarters and Messing space. Additional cooking facilities were installed in the existing kitchen.
Two prefabricated demountable buildings were installed to provide Airmen's and Sergeants' sleeping quarters and latrines and ablution facilities. A "C" Series type Guard Room with 4 cells was constructed in the yard to house prisoners. The total costs of works to modify "Careno" for RAAF occupation was £2,550.
