5 LANGSHAW STREET, LANGSHAW
FLATS, NEW FARM
IN BRISBANE DURING WWII
Langshaw Flats, 5 Langshaw Street, New Farm
Mrs Elaine Brookes Bessemer Clark, the 2nd daughter of Sir Norman and Lady Brookes of Cliff House, Frankston, Victoria lived in one of the flats at Langshaw Flats at 5 Langshaw Street, New Farm during WWII. Elaine lived there with her two year old son Anthony, his Nanny and their Cocker Spaniel. Elaine was the girlfriend of Major General Richard Sutherland, General Douglas MacArthur's Chief of Staff. Elaine's husband was at the time a soldier in the English Grenadier Guards.
Elaine was enlisted in the Women's Army Corps when MacArthur's Headquarters moved to Hollandia.
Some records sometimes refer to Langshaw Flats as the Embassy. Does anyone know the background to this claim?
Can anyone help me with more information?
