John's real name was Jan Gulewicz. Jan was born in Blagoveshschensk in Siberia on 21 February 1919. The town is near the border of Siberia and Manchuria. For convenience John often stated that he was born in Rudin, Poland. He used to say this because Blagoveshschensk was a bit hard to spell. His mother was born in Rudin, Poland.
The Goulevitches and their friends the Shemlovskis came from three villages in central Russia to Manchuria. They left Siberia to take up new land and lived in Shanghai for a few years.
