111 Aust General
Hospital was initially raised by DADMS 6 Mil Dist as an annexe
to the Royal Hobart Hospital, in Hobart, Tasmania. It relocated
to "Merton Vale", at Campbell Town in Tasmania in late 1941. By
April 1942, there were 350 beds at 111 AGH when they joined
DADMS Tas Force. In April 1943 DADMS Tas Force became DADMS Tas
L of C Area.
"Merton Vale" was owned
by Lt. Col. Henry Foster who died at "Merton Vale" on 28 March
1944.
111 AGH reduced to 250
beds in April 1943 then down to 200 beds in November 1943. In
March 1945, 81 Spec Hosp was absorbed into 111 AGH which
operated beyond the end of WWII.
In August 1946,
hutments and fittings surplus to requirements were submitted for
disposal, comprising 99 Lots. See National Archives of Australia
file reference and link below.
The former 111 AGH was
purchased by the Tasmanian Government after WWII and in about
1947 it was used as a receiving centre for immigrants from Great
Britain.
The Campbell Town
Museum and Visitor Information Centre in the old Town Hall has a
display on 111 Aust General Hospital. The old Town Hall building
was sold in the second quarter of 2026.
