SQUADRON RAF
IN AUSTRALIA DURING WWII
549 Squadron RAF was initially formed at Lawnton Airfield in south east Queensland on 15 December 1943. 549 Squadron relocated to Petrie Airfield on 1 January 1944. Their new Spitfire aircraft arrived in April 1944. 549 Squadron then relocated to Amberley Airfield on 24 May 1944.
They relocated to Strauss Airfield in the Northern Territory on 16 June 1944. A Detachment was established at Truscott Airfield in Western Australia. The group at Strauss Airfield then relocated to Parap Airfield in Darwin on 23 October 1944. 549 Squadron was disbanded in October 1945.
