BROOKHILL AMMUNITION
MAGAZINE
NEAR TOWNSVILLE, QLD
DURING WW2
In the 1880's the Queensland Colonial Government decided to upgrade Townsville's military defences. In 1890 work began on the construction of Battery positions at Fort Kissing Point and Magazine Island in the Port area and an Ammunition Magazine at Brookhill.
Brookhill is located just south of Roseneath on the western side of the Flinders highway to Charters Towers near Stony Creek.
The 55th Field Park Company of the RAE 5th Division were based at Brookhill in May 1942.
The Brookhill Magazines, now known as the Brookhill Explosives Reserve, are still in use today under the control of the Department of Natural Resources and Mines of the Queensland Government.
