2/8 Independent Company was formed in about 1942 and possibly trained at No. 7 Infantry Training Centre at Tidal River on Wilson's Promontory in Victoria.

The 2/8th Independent Company were camped in the Yandina area in southern Queensland during WW2. They may have been camped at the base of nearby Mount Ninderry. In late 1942 the 2/8 Independent Company accidentally blew up telephone lines and thus deprived 5,000 local residents of that particular service whilst they were practising their bridge-blowing skills on an old bridge about 5 miles south of Yandina.

By late 1943 the 2/8 Independent Company had bee re-designated the 2/8 Commando Squadron AIF.
