The 2/7 Independent Company was based near the base Mount Ninderry near Yandina in southern Queensland during WW2. A memorial sign can be seen on the road between Yandina and Coolum.

2/7 Independent Company departed Australia arriving in Port Moresby on 4 October 1942. Soon after they were moved by aircraft to Wau where they joined 2/5 Independent Company in Kanga Force.

2/7 Independent Company departed Wau in May 1943 for Port Moresby. From there they flew to Bena Bena, which is inland from coastal Madang. Here their role was to prevent the Japanese taking the Bena Bena airfield which is located between the Finisterre and Bismark Ranges. The area provides access to the Markham and Ramu Valleys. 2/7 Independent Company reinforced Kanga Force in October 1942.

2/2 Independent Company also moved into the area in July 1943. The engineer sections of the 2/2 and 2/7 Independent Companies supervised the construction of the Goroka airfield.
