IN AUSTRALIA DURING WW2
2/3 Independent Company was formed in 1941 and was trained at No. 7 Infantry Training Centre at Tidal River on Wilson's Promontory in Victoria.
The 2/3 Independent Company, Australian Army initially camped in the Yandina showgrounds during WW2. The 2/3 Ind Coy was also camped at Camp Chermside for a brief stay after they were at Yandina. Prior to this, and prior to their service in New Caledonia before the big American taskforce under General Patch arrived (where the 2/3 trained the Americans before the US forces went onto Guadalcanal), the 2/3 was also at Woodside, S.A.
The 2/3 Independents were camped at Binna Burra in the Lamington National Park during the last few months of 1942 before heading to the torrid Wau - Salamaua campaign in New Guinea.
By the end of 1943 the 2/3 Independent Company was re-designated the 2/3 Commando Squadron, 2/7 Cavalry (Commando) Regiment.
